We have found that simple toys are the best. Rather than something complex that requires batteries and set-up and parental input, we prefer simple and sturdy items that our children can build an imaginary world around. A quickly made Forest Fort made of a sheet thrown over a couple of folding chairs or a pair of pots and pans with lids and a wooden spoon: these make for a great rainy day adventure or a quiet moment for mom or dad who just need to sit and watch and encourage with words.

The right furniture for children can work the same magic. A simple children’s table and chairs can provide a great creative area for a three to six year year old. With a clean, flat surface, a child can paint, or color, or build with blocks, or read his favorite book. And a good table and chair set lasts for a long time – certainly through the life time of that child.

Too big, and it’s no longer conducive to long spells of play and productivity. Too small, and the children won’t even come around it.

These will hold all a child can place on the surface of the table, even himself! A careful application of wood stain and water-resistant protective covering will ensure that the attractive appearance of the furniture last for years. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for intended weight and size or age of your child.

Then step out of your child’s way – she will know what to do from the moment the furniture set is available. All you need provide is some paper and crayons, maybe some play dough, and lots of quiet time. You’ll be happy you thought of this great “toy.”
