There’s nothing worse then carrying too much gear on a long hike! The most mundane type of stool is the folding step stool. But for all its commonness, this handy tool is essential for the activities at home and at work. The nearby discount store will have a quick-buy option, but if you can take a little time to consider your options, you’ll end up with a long lasting, durable item. The simplest stool is perhaps the B&R EZ Foldz Step Stool (available at Amazon for around $14) with an ingenious design of small rectangles that fold out into a sturdy 9 inches high step stool with a respectable 300 pound weight capacity. And for higher reaches and more business-like environments, the manufacturer Cosco offers their Three-Step Wood Folding Step Stool that folds out with a top step that is 13 inches high. Three 9 1/4 inch platform steps include a locking top step, and there is a safety rail across the top of the steps to make climbing more stable.

For outdoor activities, there are folding stools for camping, sports and field events and even light-weight hiking use. Some folding stools are even big and sturdy enough to do double duty as your full-time camping chairs. The simplest design may be the Camp Time Roll-Up Stool (Camp-Mor item #41198; $25). This item is made with three layers of strong polyester fabric and 1 inch diameter legs made of heavy gauge aluminum. The stool opens to 18 inches high and 14 inches triangular with a surprising weight capacity of 250 pounds. It folds to 4 inches by 24 inches and weighs a respectable 1½ pounds for light-weight hiking.

Other outdoor stools grow in complexity and price. The WALKSTOOL brand offers the “Comfort XXXL” model, an extra-large tri-pole design that sits 30 inches high and supports up to 550 pounds of weight. It only weight a pound more than the Camp-Mor stool and offers a little more utility – for a substantially higher price ($120 at various online stores). This sort of camp stool would go great beside the camping beds in your tent, and would give you a nice place to do some reading before you turn out the flashlights.

Indoor activities for folding stools include more than just daily activities. Wedding events, spectator and group events often take advantage of the quick-fold, storeable stool. Folding bar stools may be the most interesting example of an indoor, folding stool. These stools come in 24 and 30 inch heights and vary widely in design and composition. The manufacturer Linon offers its “Triena Pad Back 24″ High Folding Counter Bar Stool model for around $70, and you’ll like the “serious stool” look that masks the folding aspect of the chair. Many bar stool models are made to complement a folding bar, so the options are numerous.

Here’s an example: the extremely simple Sol Lite Folding Beach Chair. The hinged steel tubing frame (22 mm with powder coated finish) is either in the open or in the folded position. No assembly or set-up: just pop it open. The single piece mesh seating is attached to the frame and cleans with mild soapy water. The size is simple as well: almost 17 inches long and 14 inches wide, with a seat height of 23 inches off the ground. Cost is reasonable ($36) and this beach folding chair is readily available through Target stores, Target online, Amazon, and other beach chair retailers. The weight capacity is 260 pounds, a respectable strength for a chair of this size and design. But reviewers have given one consistent complaint: there are no arm rests. To really relax while seated, you may prefer to have some comfortable arrangement for resting your arms.

An alternative to the Sol Lite chair: the Cape Cod Folding Beach Chair sold by Brookstone. This chair covers all the bases. It folds; it is made of a hardwood frame that is naturally water-resistant; and the design offers integrated wooden arm rests and five different reclining positions. Both the construction and the materials are durable. The chair is comfortable, attractive and simple to use and store. The relatively high backing on the beach chair provides for actual resting, and while it lacks a foot rest, your body will be ably supported when you are seated. Simple, comfortable – but perhaps not the most affordable: it is priced at around $140. If you purchase the chair through Amazon (ASIN: B0017MQER8), you will at least have the reassurance that any problems in shipping or in quality will be supported with Amazon’s return and customer service policies.

For my money, something in between the higher priced Brookstone chair and the less comfortable Sol Lite item would be optimal. We’re still considering top choices in small beach chairs. So the extra length in folding beach lounge chairs is outside this search. Is there an in-between option while still keeping it small?

You may want to try something like the Kelsyus Beach Canopy Chair. It has the strong metal framework and the strong fabric seating piece. No additional length for the lounge or foot rest feature. There are arm rests, but they consist of the same tubular pieces as the frame. The price is more reasonable (around $60), and the chair offers the added convenience of a fixed, but adjustable, canvas shade. All of this fits in our focus for small folding beach chairs, and it matches our in-between price criterion. The final touch for your choice may be the fact that this chair, when folded, includes shoulder straps for hands-free carrying (much like a backpack beach chair).

When I shop for a camp chair, or other camping gear, I don’t want to pay top dollar. I don’t need the very best out there. But I do demand durable and flexible items. For a camping chair, that’s going to mean a price of around sixty dollars. That’s going to include chairs that are much sturdier and more comfortable than the local convenience store’s canvas setup. But that price also means I may not get all the bells and whistles that can come on a folding camp chair: no umbrellas, no side tables or pockets to hold all my gear, no extensive reclining options or extra-sized foot rests. However, within that price range I can find LLBean’s Camp Comfort Arm Chair, REI’s roomy Comfort Recliner, and Kelty’s Essential Chair. Most of my options include a carrying bag, and with a little bit more shopping, I can probably find a great camping chair that includes a backpack folding option: it folds up into the size and weight of a backpack and with the shoulder straps, offers hands-free carrying.

Purpose for the chair
If I’m planning on a fixed site camping trip, I don’t have to worry about the weight of the folding chair I’m considering: just park the vehicle, open the storage compartments and pull out my comfy chair, camping beds, camping table, and everything else that I packed. But if I’m off on a back-packing, hiking camp out, then I need to pay attention to the weight of the chair – and lightweight chairs will require I select an appropriate weight capacity for the chair. Who’s will use the chair? Does it need to be bigger or to support more than the standard chair? So after I’ve narrowed down my options by my budget constraints, then I check the manufacturer’s specifications for weight and stability, based on my intended camping plans.

Retailer Support
With any purchase of outdoor items, it’s smart to be aware of the dealer’s reputation for providing customer support or merchandise returns. Even the best manufacturers can sell a lemon from time to time – the ultimate test of quality, though, lies in how the dealer supports the customer with that lemon. I prefer to stick with tried and true online retailers such as LLBean and Amazon. Other retailers that you have worked with will provide great support, and that may clinch your purchase.

With these guidelines in mind, you and I can easily find the best folding camping chair out there. Happy camping!

The most simple design and setup camping chairs come in the two-cushion, overcloth-hinged camp chair. One example is Kelty’s chair (UPC 00727880010416) with two pieces of closed-cell foam, joined together and hinged by the overlaying fabric. The hinge design allows for adjustable seat positions, varying angles, and the angle is held in place by the attached adjustable webbing pulls. The chair is 55.5 linear inches in size and is strengthened by the aluminum stays. This simple camp chair is priced at around $25 and is available from several online retailers, including E-Bay, Altrec.com and Backcountry.com.

For fifteen dollars more, you can improve on the quality of construction and the strength of fabric used with these two camping folding chairs:

• The Crazy Creek HexaLite Original Camp chair (item # 800086, offered by REI) is slightly smaller in overall size than the Kelty chair, but the nice touches of strong mesh made of polyester mesh/ripstop nylon may add sufficient durability to this chair to justify the additional cost.
• The Everywhere Chair from LLBean (#TA256710) offers an appealing tubular steel frame that allows for proper seating regardless of the sloping camp site. The seating is made of 600-denier-polyester cover and includes padded lumbar support. The drink holder, usually a throw-away afterthought on folding chairs. Looks like it might be very serviceable in this design.

If you prefer something higher off the ground for your folding camping chairs, you can again divide options between simpler and the more complex designs. The ALPS Mountaineering Lakeside Chair (offered by REI, # 799333A) offers a very straightforward design that provides a remarkably comfortable seating option. The chair is compactly built and folds to a 13 pound pack, 38 x 27 x 4 inches in size. The interesting frame construction features short, stubby arm rests which would work great with a busy person in the chair (frees the hands to hold a book or work on something) but which would not offer the best comfort for the fully reclining body. Clean lines, strong materials – this chair would be my choice for serious camping. And the price (around 35 dollars) is a deal clincher.

For a camping chair that folds and reclines, isn’t complicated and doesn’t break the budget, check out the REI Comfort Recliner Chair (Item # 765271) for around 60 dollars. It looks sturdy, feels comfortable, and comes from a reputable retailer. Best of all, it offers three reclining positions that will accommodate fireside conversations or middle of the day naps. The heavy-duty steel tubing and the 600 denier ripstop polyester fabric offer durability over the long-haul. This would be a very comfortable and sturdy chair.

Other options for an outdoor folding chair include Coleman camping chairs, which is definitely a brand name that you can trust, and you can even find a double camping chair if you are bringing a date along on your camping trip.

Each of the options for folding camp chairs offer versatility: they can be used in a serious camping setting, or they can be quick seats at the kids’ swim meet. Read the specifications, determine how you would like to use your camp chairs, and you’ll be prepared to make a wise choice in flexible folding chairs.

Consider first the all-in one, integrated approach to a camping table and chair set. One version offers a one-piece, multi-fold canvas and steel tube table and chairs set that travels in its own canvas bag. Yet the set opens to form an almost 70 inch square table that can hold up to 90 pounds and includes four attached camp seats. This forms something like the papa bear, mama bear and baby bears version of a standard camping folding chairs seating arrangement. The price for this complete set was around fifty dollars on one web site, so you will want to pay careful attention to the manufacturer’s recommended weight loads and the probably durability and strength of the components.

Another integrated approach to a camp table and chairs stays away from the canvas materials and instead depends on durable molded plastic and a steel frame for the structural makeup. The two-person “picnic set” manufactured by Palm Springs Sports unfolds readily to form a 27 inch by 24 inch table top, 27 inches high, with two attached seats that are 13 by 16 inches and which are 16 inches off the ground. When folded for storage, the item looks very similar to a collapsed card table with the folded chairs attached. The folded set slides handily into car trunks, RV compartments, back seats, or closets for storage. It may be your perfect quick set-up for the spontaneous get away for two. This type of camping table might also double well as a children’s table and chairs set.

Some stronger, non-integrated set-ups for folding camping table and chairs may provide more strength. One option comes in an aluminum fold-away table with two separate “chairs” that more closely resemble camp stools. The three-piece set travels folded in a 24 inch by 16 inch by five inch pack (self-storage carry bag included), but it opens up to a strong 24 inch by 31 inch table surface. This may not offer the comfort of the folding camping chairs with canvas back and seats, but the efficient and strength may make a set like this a better buy.

One of the least traditional set-ups I have seen for camping tables and chairs is the “roll-a-table” from Camp Time Manufacturing. The table top surface can actually roll up because of its wood slat design: slats are hinged inside a waterproof fabric. When un-rolled, the wood slats quickly become a table when the tubular aluminum legs are screwed on. The specifications indicate the 32 inch square table surface and legs can support 100 pounds, yet the set folds to a 32 inch by 6 inch roll. The set-up table height of 28 allows for many options of chairs to complete the set.

All of these set-ups for a camp table and chairs differ significantly from the traditional table and matching chairs image, but the price, flexibility and portability of these options may better meet your needs and budget for your outdoor adventures.
