4 Super Lightweight Camping Chairs

In my last article,, I talked about some super comfortable camping chairs that are perfect for car camping. But as I mentioned, each of those chairs weighs about 10 pounds or more, so what sort of camping chairs should you look for when you are planning on hiking in to your campsite and don’t want to lug around a heavy chair?

The first lightweight camping chair we’re gonna take a look at is a traditional camping stool from REI. It’s currently priced around $20 US and weighs just over one pound – perfect for taking on long hikes.

As you can see, this sort of camping chair is a long way from the super comfortable chairs with canopies and footrests we looked at last time, but it is well made, durable and reasonably comfortable. It also works well if you have limited space in your campsite – it’s footprint is only about 10 inches.

The next chair is also a great option for carrying in to a campsite. It’s a stadium-seat-type camping chair, and is super light – it weighs under one pound! This chair is made by Crazy Creek, priced at $40 US and is also available at REI.

These sorts of camping chairs are great for long hikes, as they are so lightweight, and they also fold down to almost nothing, making it very easy to fit into your backpack. The only problem with them is that they are pretty much the bottom of the barrel in terms of comfort. You’re sitting directly on the ground, with only a thin pad between you and any rocks, roots, or mud, and I’ve never been able to really relax in one. But if the weight of your camping chair is a big concern for you, then this is definitely an option to consider.

The third camping chair is a variation of the camping stool we saw earlier. Instead of a tripod, this one has two U-shaped legs and folds in the middle for transport. This chair is made by Coleman and is available at Amazon for under $20 US.

In my experience, these sorts of stools are generally not as comfortable as the tripod version, but your mileage may vary. This chair weighs in at 2.6 pounds, so it’s definitely an option for someone looking for a lightweight camping chair.

The last camping chair is another version of the camp stool, but this time it comes with a back rest. This chair is available at Amazon for around $20 US.

The back rest would go a long way to making the camp stool more comfortable, but it does come at a weight cost – the stool weighs in at 4 pounds. Still better than the 10 pound behemoths we’re taking car camping, but a factor to be considered for someone going on a significant hike.

4 Great Car Camping Chairs

As I mentioned in the first part of the camping chairs guide, if you’re going car camping (i.e., you can drive right up to your campsite) then you can afford to go with a larger, more comfortable chair than you would if you were going to hike in to your camping spot. In this post, we’re going to take a look at 4 different camping chairs, each of which would be perfect for car camping.

The first chair we have is essentially a classic camping chair available from REI. Fairly basic, comfortable, and well made. This sort of chair will most likely last you for years if treated well. It’s currently priced at $34.50(US), so not super cheap, but you can be sure, coming from REI, that it is high quality. One thing to note is that it weighs in at nearly 10 pounds, so that’s definitely something to consider when making your selection. This is not a chair you want to be lugging in on a long hike.

Another thing to know about these types of camping chairs is that they fold down easily for storage and travel. Each chair will be slightly different, but they usually fold down into a long cylinder shape about 2 feet long, and also usually come with a carrying case for easy transportation.

The second chair we have is a variation of the classic chair. This one is made by ALPS, available at Amazon, and is designed to be more comfortable (with extra padding and such) than the standard camping chair. This chair would be great if you are planning on, say, fishing and will be sitting for long periods of time.

This chair also weighs in at nearly 10 pounds, and folds flat for storage and travel instead of into a cylinder.

Our third chair is made by Kelsyus and is also available at Amazon. It is a canopy chair, which is to say that it is a standard champing chair that come with a canopy that attaches on top. This sort of chair is great for the beach, camping out in the open, or any sort of area with a lot of sun and little or no shade.

Also, guys, if you are trying to get your wife or girlfriend to come camping with you, and she’s worried that she won’t have anywhere to relax, then this is the chair for you! Grab a pitcher to make some sweet tea, and this chair, and she’ll be set!

This last chair is also a great one for people who want to make sure they’ll be able to relax on their camping trip. It is another variation of the standard camping chair, and this time it comes with a footrest. It’s made by Xscape and is available at Amazon.

Let me tell you, there are few things better than coming back into camp from a morning hike, sitting down in this chair with a cold beverage, putting your feet up, and taking a little nap. This chair weighs in at over 11 pounds and is currently priced at $50(US).

Top 5 Online Camping Chairs Retailers

REI.com

Having grown up near Atlanta, I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for REI. I remember being able to go to the REI store there every couple of years when we would go camping, and I was always amazed at the sheer volume of camping things to look at and buy. Childhood nostalgia notwithstanding, REI is one of the premiere outdoors suppliers in the nation, and while you may not be too close to one of their stores, you can buy anything they make from their website or catalog.

REI doesn’t have the wide range of brands available that some other retailers will, but they do have several options in addition to their own name brand. REI may also be a bit more pricey than what you will find in other places, but the quality of products they sell is always top notch.

Amazon.com

The hallmark of Amazon.com has always been the wide range of items, products, and brands available for perusal and purchase. The internet giant has hundreds, if not thousands, of camping chairs available, ranging from big and bulky to light and small. The only issue with shopping at Amazon is actually the size of their inventory: with so many choices to look through, it’s easy to become overwhelmed before you find what you’re looking for. Overall, though, Amazon is a great place to shop and is highly recommended to anyone looking for camping chairs or other camping gear.

Walmart.com

Starting to develop a stronger internet presence, the retail giant has come a long ways toward giving pure internet stores a run for their money. Walmart will generally have a large selection of items and brands at great prices, and their website is easier to use than ever. I don’t recommend buying off-brand items from Walmart though, as the quality will most likely be poor. It’s not worth saving 5 bucks if you get a camping chair that breaks on your first trip.

DicksSportingGoods.com

Dick’s Sporting Goods has had a period of decent growth over the last few years since their purchase of Galyan’s. Having a large chain like Dick’s devoted solely to sporting goods means a wide selection of brands and generally decent prices. However, as with Walmart, I would be careful of buying off-brand items from them as the quality may be suspect. (Just to be clear, that’s not a knock on Dick’s at all, but I do suggest doing your research first and choosing a high quality chair from a reputable brand.)

Cabelas.com

As with REI, you’re probably not anywhere close to a Cabela’s store, but you can always look through their website or catalog to see what they have to offer. Cabela’s is a “middle of the road” retailer: decent quality, decent prices, but nothing spectacular. The biggest issue with Cabela’s is definitely their limited inventory. It is certainly the smallest of the 5 retailers I’ve listed here.
